Dear ISWNE Members,

The ISWNE board of directors met by conference call this morning and voted to postpone the June 2020 conference, scheduled to be held at the University of Nevada, Reno, to 2021.

The board was concerned that many newspapers wouldn’t be able to afford attending the conference, as advertising is being canceled at an alarming rate and that cash flow will become an issue. Some papers have already laid off staff members and reduced salaries.

The second concern was that there is a 50-50 chance the University of Nevada, Reno will cancel summer classes, and if that happens the residence halls/food service wouldn’t be available for our use.

So, we will plan to meet at the University of Nevada, Reno in 2021, with Steve Ranson continuing as conference host. The conference scheduled for Toronto will be pushed back to 2022, with Gordon Cameron making the arrangements.

The 2020 election of officers, which takes place at the annual business meeting at the conference, will be done electronically. The past presidents will come up with a proposed slate, and then we will take other nominations by email. The voting will be done by email after the nomination period has passed.

ISWNE has had an annual conference every year since the Society began in 1955, so we are obviously extremely disappointed. We will honor the 2020 Golden Quill winner and the 2020 Eugene Cervi winner next year in Reno.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. In the meantime, stay hunkered down and safe with your families.

Chad Stebbins

ISWNE Executive Director
